PIONEERS CAN’T SOLVE MSU PITCHING
MSU 4, TWU 1 - Box Score
MSU 5, TWU 1 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (March 26) – A dominant effort from the Midwestern State University pitching staff carried the Mustangs to a doubleheader sweep of the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Wednesday night at Pioneer Field in Denton.
In game one, the Mustangs’ pitching duo of freshman Brittany Tanner and sophomore Katie Petersen combined to limit the Pioneers to just four hits and one earned run in a 4-1 MSU win. Tanner started the game in the circle for MSU, and worked five strong innings before giving way to Petersen for the final two innings. The Pioneers scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore outfielder Billie Callahan (pictured), the reigning LSC South Division Hitter of the Week, knocked in junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone with a one-out RBI single. Junior centerfielder Maranda Bishop and sophomore second baseman Tabitha Yanetti paced the Mustangs’ offense in the win with three hits apiece.
The second game of the night was a virtual carbon copy of the first. Senior Ashley Kuchenski started the game in the circle for MSU and held the Pioneers without a hit in four innings of work. Petersen took the ball from Kuchenski in the bottom of the fifth inning and allowed TWU just four hits and one run in their final three at bats as MSU coasted to a 5-1 win. The bulk of the MSU offense came in the top of the sixth inning when they used three singles, a double, two stolen bases and one TWU error to put three runs on the board and break open what had been a close game.
MSU improves to 23-12 on the season with the two wins. The Pioneers’ record drops to 10-26 with the two losses.
TWU will have to bounce back quickly, as they are scheduled to play seven games in three days this weekend (Friday, March 28-Sunday, March 30) at the 2008 Lone Star Conference Softball Crossover Tournament in Durant, Oklahoma.
