PIONEERS SPLIT WITH LADY BUFFS
WTAMU 9, TWU 4 (nine innings) - Box Score
TWU 4, WTAMU 2 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (March 1) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers and the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs split a Lone Star Conference South Division doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Denton.
WTAMU claimed the first game with a 9-4 victory in nine innings. The Pioneers opened the scoring in the contest by plating four runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning. The big hit of the frame for TWU was a triple to left center field by junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone that drove in two runs.
TWU, however, could not make their early lead stand up, as WTAMU clawed back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the third and solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings. After scoreless seventh and eighth innings, the Lady Buffs struck for five runs in the decisive top of the ninth, thanks primarily to a two-run double from junior first baseman Brytany Lemon.
The Pioneers bounced back to win game two by a 4-2 margin. The turning point in the victory for TWU was a single by junior first baseman Ashley Martin (pictured) in the bottom of the fifth inning that drove in two runs. Sophomore pitcher Carly Case earned the win in the circle for TWU by pitching seven strong innings, striking out six, and scattering five hits.
The split leaves the Pioneers with a 7-17 overall record and a 1-2 mark in LSC South play. The Lady Buffs will head back to West Texas with an 11-9 record and a 2-1 standing in the LSC South.
TWU will return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 5, when they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas for an afternoon doubleheader at Midwestern State University.
