DENTON, Texas (March 13) – The Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm pounded out 23 hits in two games to sweep a doubleheader from the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers in Thursday night softball action at Pioneer Field in Denton.
Four different SOSU players - senior outfielder Rachel Lynn, senior outfielder Ashley Graham, junior shortstop Bailey Mathes, and junior third baseman Jaclyn Mullaney - had three hits apiece to carry the Savage Storm to an 11-4 win in the first game of the evening. Graham’s trio of hits, all singles, produced five RBI’s. Mathes drove in four runs, three of them on a home run to centerfield in the top of the first inning. Senior shortstop Rachel Johnson was the top player in the loss for TWU, collecting two base hits, including her fifth double of the year, knocking in two runs, and scoring one run.
The Savage Storm offense continued to prosper in the second game, banging out four extra base knocks to roll to a 7-1 win. The biggest hits of the game were solo home runs from junior pitcher Marjorie Johnson (in the top of the second) and Mathes (in the top of the sixth). Senior third baseman Meagan Peiser (a double in the second) and junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone (a triple in the third) were the only TWU players to manage more than a single off of SOSU junior pitcher Jami McAdoo.
SOSU, the 13th-ranked team in this week’s NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, improves to 27-4 with the two wins. TWU falls to 8-24 with the two losses.
The Pioneers will enjoy a much-needed weekend off before returning to the field on Tuesday, March 18, when they host the University of the Incarnate Word in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
