DENTON, Texas (February 9) - The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers won two of their three games played on the first day of the six-team TWU Tournament being held at Pioneer Field on the TWU campus and Tina Minke Field at Billy Ryan High School.
Sophomore pitcher Carly Case (pictured) tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout for the Pioneers in their first game of the day, leading TWU to a 3-0 win over the University of Central Missouri. Senior shortstop Rachel Johnson provided the majority of the offense for TWU in the victory as she totaled two hits, one for extra bases, and one run batted in.
The Pioneer bats heated up in home team’s second game of the day, banging out nine hits in a 7-4 win over a Lone Star Conference North Division team, West Texas A&M University. Sophomore outfielder Angie Arebalos and sophomore designated hitter Kaley Frye each knocked in two runs apiece for TWU.
Despite eight more hits, the Pioneers could only generate a pair of runs in a 5-2 loss to another LSC North team, Midwestern State, in their final game of the night. Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone was the standout TWU player in the loss, collecting two hits and one stolen base.
