SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 3, 2008) – A nine-run first inning offensive outburst helped the St. Mary’s University Rattlers to a 12-0 five-inning win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Sunday morning at the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II College Classic in San Antonio, Texas.
The Rattlers early offensive surge in the opening frame of the game was sparked by five walks and two TWU errors.
“You just can’t overcome that,” said TWU head coach Randy Porter of his team’s early miscues. “ St. Mary’s is a quality ballclub, and they took advantage of every mistake we made.”
The Pioneer bats could not solve St. Mary’s pitcher Taryn Munoz. The sophomore hurler scattered four hits in five innings of work to pick up the complete game shutout win for the Rattlers.
St. Mary’s, the ninth-ranked team in the NFCA Division II Top 25 Preseason Poll, posted a 4-1 record and a +16 run-differential to win the fourteen-team season-opening tournament.
 Junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone (pictured) was one of the bright spots of the weekend for TWU (0-5). The Keller native collected nine hits in 16 at bats and stole six bases on seven attempts in the Pioneers’ five tourney games to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team.
The Pioneers will return to the diamond next weekend when they host the six-team TWU Tournament at Pioneer Field and Billy Ryan High School on Saturday, February 9, and Sunday, February 10.
