DENTON, Texas (February 29) – West Texas A&M University freshman pitcher Shannon O’Dea tossed a complete game one-hit shutout to lead the Lady Buffs to a 5-0 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Friday night at Pioneer Field in Denton.
Making the just the eighth start of her collegiate career, O’Dea was masterful against the Pioneers. The only hit she allowed was a harmless two-out single to TWU left fielder Billie Callahan in the bottom of the third inning.
“O’Dea was outstanding to say the least,” explained TWU head coach Randy Porter. “We never really threatened her, never got her out of her comfort zone, and consequently, she controlled our hitters all night long.”
TWU sophomore pitcher Carly Case matched O’Dea pitch-for-pitch for the majority of the game, holding the Lady Buffs hitless and off the scoreboard through their first five at-bats. WTAMU, however, roughed up Case in the top of the sixth inning for five runs on six hits. The big base knock in the inning for the Lady Buffs was a double from sophomore catcher Amber Farr that drove in three runs.
The game was the Lone Star Conference South Division opener for both teams. The win improves the Lady Buffs record to 10-8 on the season, 1-0 in the LSC South. With the loss, TWU falls to 6-16 overall, 0-1 in the LSC South.
TWU and WTAMU will wrap up their two-day weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon at Pioneer Field.
