PIONEERS WIN TWO AT DIAMOND REDDIE CLASSIC
TWU 5, TAMK 2 - Box Score
TWU 2, HSU 1 - Box Score
ARKADELPHIA, Arkansas (February 22) – Outstanding pitching and timely hitting helped the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers pick up a pair of wins at the Henderson State University Diamond Reddie Classic on Friday afternoon in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
In their first game of the day, TWU claimed a 5-2 eight-inning victory Texas A&M University-Kingsville. The Pioneers jumped out a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when sophomore outfielder Billie Callahan (pictured) knocked in junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone from second base with an RBI double. TAMK responded to the quick TWU score with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to tie the game at one. Neither team would score until the Pioneers erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth. Boone, Callahan, and senior shortstop Rachel Johnson fueled the TWU offensive outburst with RBI base hits. Sophomore outfielder Angie Arebalos also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. TWU sophomore pitcher Allie Packer held TAMK to just one run in the home half of the eighth to seal the win for the Pioneers. Packer scattered nine hits and allowed just one earned run to pick up the complete game win in the circle for TWU.
A solo home run in the top of the fifth inning off the bat of sophomore catcher Amber Brooks gave the Pioneers a 2-1 win over Henderson State University in their second game of the day. Brooks’ blast, the first homer of the season for TWU, made a winner of the Pioneers’ sophomore pitcher Carly Case. The Bowie, Texas native held a hot-hitting HSU lineup to just five hits and one earned run in seven innings of work to claim her third win of the year.
With the two wins, TWU improves to 5-12 on the season. The Pioneers will stay in Arkadelphia and play TAMK and Henderson State again on Saturday on the second and final day of the weekend tournament.
