PIONEERS STUMBLE TO START SEASON

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 1) - The Texas Woman’s University softball team opened their 2008 season on Friday with a pair of one-run losses at the St. Mary’s NCAA Division II College Classic being played in San Antonio, Texas.
The Pioneers were edged 4-3 by Texas A&M-Kingsville, a fellow Lone Star Conference foe, in their first game of the day. TAMK scored all four of their runs in the first inning and then held off a late Pioneer rally to get the win.
TWU came up just short again in their second game, losing by the same 4-3 score to St. Edward’s University. Just as they did versus TAMK, the Pioneers fell behind early, allowing three Hilltopper runs in the first inning. TWU would rally and tie the game at three only to see SEU plate the winning run in the seventh inning.
TWU head coach Randy Porter said a sloppy pitching effort hurt his team. Sophomore Allie Packer, the losing pitcher versus TAMK, and junior Ashley Martin, the pitcher of record against St. Edward’s, combined for 13 walks in the two games.
“I know it’s early in the season, but that’s just unacceptable,” explained Porter. “You can’t expect to win when you give your opponents that many free baserunners. The walks put us in a hole in both games and we just weren’t able to recover.”
The Pioneers (0-2) will continue play in the fourteen-team tournament with games on Saturday afternoon versus Delta State University and Cameron University.
