TWU DEFEATS DIXIE STATE, LOSES TO CHICO STATE
TWU 4, Dixie State College 1 - Box Score
Chico State (California) 3, TWU 2 - Box Score
PHOENIX, Arizona (February 14) - The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers split a pair of games on Thursday afternoon at the Schutt Sports Division II Lead-Off Classic in Phoenix, Arizona.
TWU sophomore pitcher Carly Case allowed just six hits and one earned run while striking out five in the Pioneers’ first game of the day, a 4-1 win over Dixie State College. Case received plenty of offensive support in the contest from senior shortstop Rachel Johnson (2-4, 1B, 3B, RBI), pictured junior centerfielder Tiffanie Boone (2-4, RBI, SB), and sophomore outfielder Angie Arebalos (2-3, R).
The Pioneers dropped a 3-2 decision to Chico State (California) in their second game of the day. Sophomore pitcher Allie Packer took the loss in the circle for TWU despite allowing just three hits in six innings of work in the circle. Seven walks and an untimely wild pitch proved to be Packer’s undoing against the Wildcats.
“Allie is pitching well enough for us to win ballgames,” said TWU head coach Randy Porter. “She’s got good stuff out there. I believe in her as a pitcher, but, like I told her after the game, she’s got to quit gift wrapping runs for our opponents and make them earn it.”
Boone (3-3, 3B, 2B, R) and sophomore catcher Kaley Frye (2RBI) hit the ball well for TWU in the defeat to Chico State.
TWU (3-9) will play their final game in pool play on Friday, February 15, at 9:30 a.m. CST versus Washburn University. Bracket play in the 28-team tournament will begin on Friday afternoon.
