TWU SOFTBALL TEAM SIGNS FOUR
DENTON , Texas (November 27) - The Texas Woman’s University softball team picked up four commitments during the recently completed early signing period.
Third baseman Erin Hinojosa, shortstop Jessica Lamonica (pictured), infielder April Mandel, and first baseman Sherri Polanco all signed national letters of intent to begin playing for the Pioneers in 2009.
Hinojosa will transfer to TWU from North Central Texas College in Gainesville, Texas. Prior to her stint at NCTC, Hinojosa earned three softball varsity letters (2004-2006) at Keller High School in Keller, Texas. In 2004, she was an honorable mention selection to the All-District 5-5A team. In 2005, she led her Indian team to the UIL Class 5A Texas State Championship and was named to the UIL Class 5A All-State team, the All-District 5-5A first-team, and the NWSA All-Tournament team. As a senior in 2006, she helped Keller to a runner-up finish in the UIL Class 5A Texas State Tournament and was picked for the All-District 5-5A second team. Hinojosa played her club softball for the Fort Worth BatBusters 18 and under team.
Lamonica is a local product from Denton’s Billy Ryan High School. She will graduate in May 2008 with four softball varsity letters (2005-2008). As a junior last season, she helped the Raiders to a runner-up finish in the 2007 UIL Class 5A Texas State Tournament. Additionally, she was picked as the 2007 District 5-4A Defensive Player of the Year. Lamonica has played club softball for the Denton Doom (2000-2005) and Denton Impact (2005-present).
Mandel hails from Decatur, Texas and is about to begin her third year as a member of the varsity softball team at Boyd ( Texas) High School. In 2007, she hit .446 with 30 runs scored and 29 runs batted in to lead the Lady Yellowjackets to the UIL Class 2A Texas State Playoffs. She was named the 2007 Wise County Player of the Year and the 2007 District 10-2A Defensive Player of the Year. As a sophomore, she led her area in both runs batted in and doubles to help Boyd to a bi-district championship. Additionally, she was chosen as the 2006 Wise County Newcomer of the Year and the 2006 District 9-2A Offensive Player of the Year. She was also an honorable mention choice to the 2006 UIL Class 2A All-State team. Mandel has played club softball for five teams - the California Grapettes, Texas Heat, Shadows 18 Gold, Texas Glory, and the Fort Worth BatBusters.
Polanco will come to TWU from Waxahachie ( Texas) High School. The upcoming 2008 season will be her third as a member of the Indians varsity softball squad. Last year, she helped her team to the District 15-4A championship and the Region 2 quarterfinals. She was picked as the 2007 District 15-4A Most Valuable Player and the Indians offensive player of the year. Additionally, she was chosen for the 2007 UIL Class 4A All-State first team. In 2006, she was named the District 15-4A Defensive Player of the Year and the Waxahachie High School team MVP. She also tabbed for the 2006 UIL Class 4A All-State second team. To this point in her high school career, Polanco is batting .633 with 15 doubles, 10 triples, five home runs and 44 runs batted in. She has competed on the club level for the Fort Worth BatBusters, Texas Glory, and California Grapettes.
TWU head softball coach Randy Porter is excited about his four newest players.
“I’m looking forward to getting them here,” stated Porter. “All of these young ladies are excellent players. They should really upgrade the overall talent level of our team.”
