PIONEERS ELIMINATED FROM LSC TOURNAMENT

IRVING, Texas (May 4)A pair of losses on Friday afternoon eliminated the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers from the 2007 Lone Star Conference Softball Tournament.

In their first game of the tourney, the TWU was defeated 7-1 by the defending tournament champion Midwestern State University Mustangs. The pitching efforts of freshman Katie Petersen and junior Ashley Kuchenski made the difference in the game for the MSU. Petersen started in the circle for the Mustangs, and held TWU to just two hits, while striking out six, in four innings of work. Kuchenski relieved Petersen for the final three innings of the game and was nearly as good, allowing just three hits and a single TWU run. Petersen was credited with the win for MSU (her fourth of the season against the Pioneers) while Kuchenski earned her first save of the season. The Mustangs got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the second inning when 6 hits, 1 walk, and 1 TWU error led to five MSU runs. Playing with the lead, and relying on the strong pitching of Petersen and Kuchenski, Midwestern rolled to the comfortable win. Senior Lindsy Russ-Keller, who gave up 10 hits and five earned to MSU in six innings pitched, was charged with the pitching loss for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers second game of the day resulted in a 7-0 loss to Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Junior pitcher Natalie Jones was the catalyst in the win for TAMUK. Jones retired 14 of the final 15 TWU hitters she faced in pitching a complete game, three-hit shutout for the Javelinas. All seven of the runs TAMUK scored in the game were unearned, thanks to five TWU errors. Freshman Allie Packer (3.1 IP, 7 hits allowed) was the losing pitcher in the contest for TWU.

TWU head coach Randy Porter gave credit to the opposing pitchers following his team’s frustrating day.

“The pitching we faced today was just tremendous. You have to give credit where credit is due. The pitchers for Midwestern State and A&M-Kingsville just handcuffed us all day long. When you can’t get anything going offensively it makes it awfully tough to win ballgames,” said Porter.

TWU ends their 2007 season with a final record of 25-34.

The LSC Tournament will conclude on Saturday at Southwest Park in Irving, Texas.
