PORTER WILL REMAIN AT TWU AS HEAD SOFTBALL COACH

DENTON, Texas (May 10) Texas Woman’s University Director of Athletics Chalese Connors announced today that Randy Porter will remain at TWU as the head softball coach.

Porter (pictured) was hired on an interim basis as the Pioneers’ bench boss on December 30, 2006. Despite having less than two months to prepare for the 2007 season, Porter led the Pioneers to a 25-34 record and a berth in last weekend’s Lone Star Conference Tournament.

Porter’s impact on the Pioneers was best illustrated over the last two weeks of the regular season when TWU won seven of their final eight games to move into position for postseason play.

“We improved as the season went along and we stayed competitive,” said Connors. “That says a lot about Randy’s abilities as a coach. He took over the team during a difficult time and was able to right the ship and keep our softball program going in a positive direction. I’m excited to see what he can do with this team.”

TWU is the second college head coaching job for Porter. From 1979-84, he was in charge of the University of Texas at Arlington softball program where he compiled an overall record of 250-161. Following his 1983 season with the Mavericks, he was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year.

Porter’s high school coaching resume is also very extensive. In 1994, he coached at Arlington High School, and led the Lady Colts to a 15-18 mark. From 1999-01, he was the head coach at Haltom High School in Haltom City, Texas. At Haltom, he totaled a coaching record of 79-34-2 and led the Lady Buffs to a regional finals appearance in 2000 and an area championship in 2001.

Following his success at Haltom High, Porter moved on to Birdville ( Texas) High School in 2002. He would coach five seasons (2002-06) for the Lady Hawks, piling up an impressive 133-43 record. Porter’s efforts helped Birdville win two area championships (2003 and 2004) and reach the area finals on two other occasions (2005 and 2006).

Porter, who received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1972 from East Central State University in Oklahoma and his master’s in education in 1975 from North Texas State University, is excited to be staying at TWU.

"This (TWU) is the place I want to be,” Porter said. “This University has a legacy of softball excellence and I promise I’m going to do everything in my power to build on that tradition.”
