PIONEERS POUND TEXAS WESLEYAN 5-0
TWU 5, Texas Wesleyan 0 - Box Score
FORT WORTH, Texas (September 2) – Five different Texas Woman’s University players scored goals to help the Pioneers to a 5-0 win over the Texas Wesleyan University Rams on Tuesday night at Martin Field in Fort Worth.
Sophomore midfielder Kylie Morgan (pictured) started the TWU goal barrage in the 25th minute of the game when she headed in a cross from junior midfielder Jacqueline Horner. The Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 five minutes later when junior forward Chastity Hayter netted her first goal of the season.
The halftime break did little to cool off the Pioneer offense. Horner and senior defender Theresa Sanches scored goals in the first two minutes of the second half to give TWU an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Freshman forward Dani DeCoursin capped off the Pioneers’ scoring surge in the 59th minute when she headed in a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Rebekah Ledet.
The five goals scored were the most for the Pioneers in a single game since Aug. 30, 2006, when they scored five times in a 5-1 defeat of Texas A&M-International.
Senior goalkeeper Aly Vincent did her part in net for TWU, stopping all three shots she faced to earn the win. Vincent played the first 66 minutes of the game before giving way to the Pioneers backup netminder, sophomore Nori Morgan.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar was extremely pleased with her team’s effort against the Rams.
“I thought our energy was outstanding for the entire game,” said Benatar. “We came out attacking and we stayed aggressive for the full ninety minutes. Our hard work was rewarded with a few goals.”
The win by TWU – their first of the 2008 season – kept the Pioneers unbeaten all-time (6-0) against Texas Wesleyan.
The Pioneers (1-1) will play two games this weekend in Joplin, Missouri when they take on Missouri Western State on Friday afternoon and Missouri Southern State on Sunday afternoon.
