EARLY GOAL SPARKS LOUSIANA TECH IN 2-0 WIN OVER TWU
Lousiana Tech 2, TWU 0 - Box Score
DENTON, Texas (August 31) – A goal by Louisiana Tech sophomore midfielder Katlyn Bachan in the first two minutes of play sparked the Lady Techsters to a 2-0 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at the TWU Soccer Field.
Bachan’s early goal – the first of her collegiate career - came on Louisiana Tech’s initial offensive attack of the game. The play began with Tech senior midfielder Amy Wolstead dribbling the ball up the left side of the field towards the TWU goal. Wolstead then slipped a crossing pass to Bachan stationed just outside the TWU box in the middle of the field. Bachan ripped a low, hard shot through traffic and into the lower left hand corner of the Pioneers’ net.
“That was a defensive breakdown, plain and simple,” was how TWU head coach Fleur Benatar described the score by Bachan. “We were on our heels and just gave them way too much room. Wolstead made a nice pass and Bachan was there to convert.”
The Pioneers overcame their sluggish start and tried to rally as the game progressed. The best scoring chance for the home team came in the 44 th minute when freshman forward Dani DeCoursin fired a shot from 28 yards out that Tech freshman goalkeeper Cat Buchanan was able to stop.
“That was a good opportunity for Dani. I thought she played really well, as did the rest of our freshman that got on the field for us. They picked up our energy level quite bit and helped us get back in the game,” said Benatar.
Tech added an insurance goal in the contest’s 75th minute when freshman forward Olivia Lukasewich converted a shot from a bad angle to the right of the TWU goal box. Lukasewich’s goal was assisted by senior forward Emily Cleaveland.
Buchanan made three saves in goal for Louisiana Tech (1-1) to pick up the first win (and shutout) of her career. Senior Aly Vincent recorded 10 saves in a losing effort for TWU.
The loss spoiled the 2008 season opener for the Pioneers (0-1). Benatar, however, is confident that her team can bounce back.
“The biggest positive for us is that we played better as the game went along,” she said. “That’s a step in the right direction. We’re a young team, and we’ll definitely improve as the season progresses.”
Next up for the Pioneers will be a road game on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Texas Wesleyan University. The team will then travel to Joplin, Missouri to meet Missouri Western State and Missouri Southern State on Friday, Sept. 5, and Sunday, Sept. 7.
