PIONEERS TOP ALUMNI TEAM 2-0
DENTON, Texas (August 24) – The 2008 Texas Woman’s University soccer team scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 win over a team of TWU soccer alums on Sunday afternoon at the TWU Soccer Field.
Junior forward Chastity Hayter (pictured at right) opened the scoring for the 2008 Pioneers in the 40th minute of play when she tracked down a pass from sophomore midfielder Izzy Babb deep in the left hand corner of the alumni goal box. Hayter waited for the alumni goalkeeper to get out of position before firing the ball from a bad angle into the near corner of the net.
Sophomore forward Raven Morales tallied the second goal of the game for the 2008 Pioneers in the 76th minute when she found free space to the right of the alumni goal and tapped in a nice pass from freshman midfielder Halla Ali.
The contest was a one-sided affair throughout, as the 2008 Pioneers outshot the alums by a 36-6 margin. The current Pioneer team very nearly added two more goals, as both Babb and sophomore defender Natalie Holovach rang shots off the crossbar of the alumni goal.
TWU head soccer coach Fleur Benatar was pleased with the outcome of her first annual alumni game.
“I was just happy to see my team get a chance to play against someone else,” she said. “It’s been a long two weeks of preseason, and I know our girls were getting pretty sick of scrimmaging against each other. I thought it was a good sign that after starting out a little slow we picked up our pace as the game went along.”
The Pioneers next game will be on Sunday, Aug. 31, when they open their 2008 regular season with a 1:00 p.m. game versus Louisiana Tech University at the TWU Soccer Field.
