PRESEASON STARTS MONDAY FOR TWU SOCCER AND VOLLEYBALL TEAMS
DENTON, Texas (August 10) – The Texas Woman’s University soccer and volleyball student-athletes have returned to Denton from their off-season homes and will begin their preseason practices on Monday, Aug. 11.
Both teams will have approximately two weeks to prepare for their 2008 campaigns. The TWU soccer team will open its season with a home game on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m. versus Louisiana Tech University. The TWU volleyball squad will start its season at the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska on Friday, Aug. 29, with a 4 p.m. (CST) match against Harding University.
TWU head soccer coach Fleur Benatar is expecting a competitive preseason for her club.
“22 players will hit the field tomorrow. The 11 players that start against Louisiana Tech will be the ones that play the best and work the hardest in the practices and scrimmages over the course of the preseason,” said Benatar. “The intensity should be high from day one because playing time and starting jobs are on the line.”
Benatar is hopeful that her team can build on their impressive finish in 2007. The Pioneers won five of their final eight games last season and played in the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament for the second time in three years.
“We really gelled as a team at the end of last season and that has carried over to this year,” she explained. “This team is a confident and cohesive bunch. I’m looking forward to an outstanding season.”
Shelly Barberee’s TWU volleyball team will be shooting for their fourth consecutive winning season and a trip to the LSC postseason volleyball tournament for the sixth year in a row.
“We’ve established a winning tradition with this program over the last few years,” said Barberee. “The challenge now is to get over the hump and advance in the postseason. The players on our roster are hungry to take our success to the next level.”
