2008 TWU Soccer Schedule (PDF file)
DENTON, Texas (July 1) – The schedule for the 2008 Texas Woman’s University soccer team will feature one exhibition game, nine non-conference games, and ten contests against Lone Star Conference (LSC) opponents.
The Pioneers kick into action on Sunday, Aug. 24, when they will play the first annual TWU Soccer Alumni Game at 4 p.m. at the TWU Soccer Field. The 2008 TWU soccer team will challenge a team made up of TWU Soccer Alums in what promises to be an exciting exhibition event.
TWU will open the regular season on their home field Sunday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m. when they host Louisiana Tech University, an NCAA Division I team from the Western Athletic Conference.
After three straight road games (at Texas Wesleyan, Missouri Western State, and Missouri Southern State) the Pioneers return to Denton to play home games on Sept. 10 and Sept. 12 versus UT-Permian Basin and Texas Southern University.
A road game in Austin on Sept. 18 against St. Edward’s University and a home game on Sept. 30 versus Dallas Baptist University will serve as the Pioneers’ final tune-ups for LSC play (TWU will play one more non-conference game, on Oct. 9, at Houston Baptist University).
TWU opens the LSC portion of their schedule with home games on Friday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 5, against the University of Central Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Other LSC foes that will come to Denton this season include Midwestern State (Oct. 12), Texas A&M-Commerce (Oct. 14), Angelo State University (Oct. 24) and Abilene Christian University (Oct. 26).
The Pioneers will hit the road to play four LSC opponents - West Texas A&M (Oct. 17), Eastern New Mexico University (Oct. 19), East Central University (Oct. 31), and Northeastern State University (Nov. 2).
The 11 LSC women’s soccer teams will play each other one time apiece giving each team a total of ten conference games. The LSC will award trophies to the regular season champion and the regular season runner-up. The top six teams in the regular season conference standings will qualify for the 2008 LSC Soccer Championship to be played Nov. 6, 7, 9 on the home field of the regular season champion. The Pioneers will be looking to earn a berth in the postseason conference tournament for the second year in a row and the third time in program history.
TWU head soccer coach Fleur Benatar believes this schedule gives her team an opportunity for a successful season.
“The biggest thing is that we play eleven games on our home field this year,” said Benatar. “That’s the most home games we’ve had in one season in the history of the program. Hopefully we can play well at home and build up some confidence for our road games.”
