VINCENT-EVANS WINS LSC ACADEMIC PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

DENTON, Texas (November 7)Texas Woman’s University goalkeeper Aly Vincent-Evans has been named the 2008 Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Academic Player of the Year.

Vincent-Evans is a senior mathematics major with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average. Her success in the classroom carried over to the field this season. She started all 19 of the Pioneers’ games in 2008 and compiled a 9-7-2 record with a 1.07 goals against average and a .824 save percentage. She stopped 84 of the shots sent her way, allowed just 18 goals against, and recorded four shutouts. Twice this year she was named the LSC Goalkeeper of the Week. Her best performance of the season came on Tuesday, Oct. 28, when she made nine saves in 110:00 minutes of soccer to help the Pioneers to a scoreless draw against regionally-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce.

Vincent-Evans (pictured) is the first TWU soccer player to win the LSC Academic Player of the Year award. This is the third year in a row that she has earned a spot on the LSC All-Academic team. She is also a two-time (2007, 2008) member of the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division Women’s Soccer team.

Three other Pioneer players – midfielder Jacqueline Horner, forward Chastity Hayter, and defender Natalie Harrison – also received All-Academic honors from the LSC. Horner joined Vincent-Evans on the All-Academic team while Hayter and Harrison were selected for the 2008 LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

This is the second year in a row that Horner, a junior kinesiology major with a 4.0 cumulative GPA, has garnered LSC All-Academic recognition. She started 17 games for TWU this season and scored two goals while assisting on two more. Horner was also picked for the 2008 ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division Women’s Soccer first team.

Hayter, a kinesiology major with a 3.63 cumulative GPA, is making her second consecutive appearance on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. The speedy junior led the Pioneers this season in goals (12), shots (62), and shots on goal (33). Hayter was also chosen for the 2008 ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District VI College Division Women’s Soccer second team and recognized as a 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar.

Harrison, a senior marketing major with a 3.275 GPA, is also a repeat member of the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She started all 19 of the Pioneers’ games this season and was a valuable part of the TWU defensive corps that allowed just 21 goals against.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes need at least a 3.20 grade point average and must be at least a sophomore. The All-Academic team is voted on by the conference’s sports information directors. All academically qualified student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

The Pioneers wrapped up their 2008 campaign last weekend with a 9-8-2 overall record and a 4-4-2 mark in LSC play. The winning record was the first in the seven-year history of the TWU soccer program. The nine wins also tied the school-record for wins in a season while the eight losses were the fewest ever in a season for a TWU soccer team.
