TWU AND MSSU BATTLE TO A 1-1 TIE

DENTON, Texas (September 9) After playing 110 minutes of soccer on a hot and muggy Sunday afternoon, the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers and the Missouri Southern State University Lions had to settle for a 1-1 tie.

Thanks to a first half goal from sophomore forward Jentri White, the visiting Lions appeared to be on their way to a road win as the clock wound down in the second half.

The Pioneers, however, refused to fold, and their persistence paid off in the games’ 83rd minute when freshman forward Raven Morales gathered in a long lead pass from senior midfielder Christine Hornisher on the left side of the Missouri Southern box. Morales controlled the ball and then flicked it over the shoulder of the Lions charging goalkeeper, senior Kaney Tyler. The goal for Morales was her TWU team-high fourth of the season and her fourth in her last three games played.

MSSU came out hard to start the first overtime period and almost ended the game in the first minute of extra time when junior midfielder Nikki Llewellyn fired an uncontested shot from the top of the TWU box. The Pioneers goalkeeper, junior Aly Vincent, read the play beautifully and made a clutch save for the home side.

In the second overtime period, both teams had outstanding chances for a winning goal. In the 104th minute, MSSU senior midfielder Amy Davis shook free from the TWU defense on the left side of the Pioneers box and blasted a shot that rang off the crossbar of the Pioneers goal. In the 107th minute TWU senior midfielder Natalie Grant took a shot from ten yards out that was turned away with a diving effort from the Lions’ Tyler.

TWU head coach Fleur Benatar called the draw a good result for her team.

“It took us a while to get going in the first half again,” she said. “But, to our credit, we got better as the game went along. Raven (Morales) made a heck of a play to get the goal and Aly (Vincent) stepped up with some timely saves. I would have liked to win, but I’ll take a tie, especially against a quality opponent like Missouri Southern.”

The tie sets the Pioneers record at 2-3-1 on the season. Missouri Southern will head back to Midwest with a 4-0-1 record.

Next up for the Pioneers will be a road game on Tuesday, September 11, at Dallas Baptist University. On Sunday, September 16, TWU will be back on their home field for a 2:00 p.m. game versus the University of the Incarnate Word.
