MORALES SCORES TWICE IN 3-0 TWU WIN
DENTON, Texas (September 5) – A two-goal performance from freshman Raven Morales led the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers soccer team to a 3-0 win over the Texas Wesleyan University Rams on Wednesday afternoon at the TWU Soccer Field.
Morales scored her first goal of the game in the 58th minute when she volleyed in a cross from freshman midfielder Taylor Bullock. Bullock had dribbled past the Texas Wesleyan defense down the right side of field and served ball to Morales who was positioned in front of the Rams goal. Morales kicked the ball out of midair past Brittany O’Brien, the Rams junior goalkeeper.
Twenty minutes later, Morales struck again for the Pioneers. She ran onto a loose ball in the Texas Wesleyan end of the field and worked her way towards the Rams goal. When O’Brien came off of her line to challenge, Morales sidestepped the goalkeeper and flicked the ball into the net. Morales’s second goal of the game, and her third of the season, gave the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage that they maintained for the rest of the second half.
Morales credited to her teammates for her offensive outburst.
“On the first goal, Taylor gave me a great ball. I went to the front of the net and she placed her cross at my feet. Then, on my second goal, Chastity (Hayter, sophomore defender) was able to send me in one-on-one with the keeper. I was excited to finish that play off after missing on a few scoring opportunities in the first half,” she explained.
The two scores for Morales pushed her TWU team-leading season goal total to three. After not registering a goal in the Pioneers first three games of the season, she has now scored three goals in her last two games played.
TWU freshman Rebekah Ledet scored the first goal of the game in the 18th minute of the first half when she lofted a deep shot from 15 yards to left of the Wesleyan goal box that eluded O’Brien’s outstretched arms. Ledet was virtually at the left corner flag in the Texas Wesleyan end when she struck the ball that bended into the Texas Wesleyan goal. The tally for Ledet was her second goal of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Aly Vincent stopped all 8 Texas Wesleyan shots sent her way to record her second win, and second shutout, of the season. Vincent, the reigning Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week, has not allowed a goal in her last 165 minutes of play.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar called the victory by her team a good result.
“I was pleased,” she said, “especially with our play in the second half. It took us a while to get going, but we really improved over the course of the game. Raven scored two nice goals for us that helped us put them away.”
With the win, the Pioneers improved to 2-3 on the season. Texas Wesleyan dropped to 0-3-1 on the year.
The Pioneers will be back in action on their home field this Sunday, September 9, when they face Missouri Southern State University at 2:00 p.m.
