PEETE PUSHES TIGERS PAST TWU
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (September 23) – A goal in the final minute of the first half from freshman forward Ashleigh Peete gave the East Central University Tigers a 1-0 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at the TWU Soccer Field.
Peete’s goal came off a TWU turnover at midfield. ECU junior midfielder Katie Beth Benson controlled the ball just inside the TWU side of the field. Benson dribbled down the left sideline until she reached the TWU goal box. With a sharp left-footed kick, Benson centered the ball in front of the Pioneers net. Peete ran through a handful of TWU defenders and deflected the ball past TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent for her fourth goal of the season.
“Benson did all the work on the goal,” explained Benatar. “She shook free from our defense and sent a nice cross into the box. That was a breakdown on our part though as there is no way that Peete should have been able to sneak in there and get her foot on that ball.”
Down a goal to start the second half, the Pioneers picked up their offensive tempo and, as a result, were able to generate several quality scoring chances. In the 57 th minute, TWU freshman midfielder Rebekah Ledet (pictured) blasted a left-footed rocket from 25 yards out that forced ECU goalkeeper Kelly Davis to make a diving save. In the 85 th minute, the Pioneers’ Chastity Hayter found some free space at the top of the ECU goal box and lifted a shot that sailed just wide of the Tigers goal.
“We had our moments in the second half,” said Benatar. “We kept playing hard and, because of that, we created a few opportunities. When we get chances like that, we have to find a way to put the ball in the back of the net.”
TWU outshot ECU 17-10 for the game. The Pioneers also had three corner kicks to just one for the Tigers.
With the win, ECU snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 4-5-2 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
The game was the 2007 Lone Star Conference opener for the Pioneers. Now 0-1 in conference play, and 3-6-1 on the season, TWU will look to bounce back when they host Northeastern State University in another LSC game next Sunday, September 30, at 2:00 p.m. on the TWU Soccer Field.
