PIONEERS FALL 1-0 ON LATE PENALTY KICK
Box Score
SEARCY, Arkansas (September 21) – A penalty kick goal by senior forward Kendyl Washburn in the final minutes of the second overtime gave the Harding University Lady Bisons a 1-0 win over the Texas Woman's University Pioneers on Friday night in Searcy, Arkansas.
With time winding down in the second extra session, it appeared as if TWU and Harding were going to play to a scoreless draw. However, in the 108th minute, the Lady Bisons got the break they were looking for when the Pioneers were whistled for a foul during a scramble for a loose ball in the TWU goal box. Washburn capitalized on the opportunity for the home team when she stepped up and drilled her eighth goal of the season into the Pioneers net.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar was dissapointed that the hard-fought game was decided by a penalty kick.
"It's frustrating to see a game when both teams are going back and forth all night long end on a PK," she said. "I really felt like we had our chances to win, but so did Harding. I'm not saying that the foul call in the box was a bad call, but I'm surprised that the call was made so late in the game."
TWU finished the game with 10 shots while Harding tallied 11 total shots. The Pioneers had one more corner kick (5) than Harding did (4) in the game.
"We played well," said Benatar. "For all intents and purposes this was one of our best performances of the season. We were in sync and controlling the game offensively. When we did blow a defensive assignment, Aly (Vincent, the TWU goalkeeper) was there to bail us out. I thought we were going to win the game, but we just didn't finish when we had the chance."
The loss drops the Pioneers record to 3-5-1 on the season. With the win, Harding improves to 5-5-0.
TWU will be back in action on Sunday, September 23, when they open Lone Star Conference play with a 2:00 p.m. game against East Central University at the TWU Soccer Field.
