PIONEERS GET 3-0 WIN OVER STERLING COLLEGE
CEDAR HILL, Texas (September 1) – Three different players scored goals to lead the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a 3-0 win over the Sterling College Warriors in Saturday afternoon soccer action at Northwood University in Cedar Hill, Texas.
Freshman forward Raven Morales (pictured) opened the scoring in the game in the 39th minute of the first half for TWU when she converted an assist from midfielder Romy Luna into the first goal of her collegiate career.
In the first minute of the second half, the Pioneers extended their lead to 2-0 when freshman midfielder Rebekah Ledet registered her first goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Gayle Grand-Lienard assisted on Ledet’s goal.
TWU cemented the win later in the second half when senior Christine Hornisher registered her first tally of the season off an assist from Ledet.
Junior goalkeeper Aly Vincent made four saves in just over a half of playing time to record her first victory of the season. Freshman Nori Morgan relieved Vincent in the TWU net midway through the second half and did not allow a goal in her first college appearance.
The victory by the Pioneers, their first of the season, was a total team effort according to TWU head coach Fleur Benatar.
“All of the girls raised their level of play a little bit today,” said Benatar. “I thought we dominated the majority of the game. Offensively, we showed more aggression and created a ton of scoring chances. Hopefully this win can help us build a little confidence.”
The Pioneers (1-3) next game will be on Wednesday, September 5, when they host Texas Wesleyan University at 4:00 p.m. at the TWU Soccer Field. |
