VINCENT VALIANT IN DEFEAT FOR TWU
DENTON, Texas (August 31) – Despite 13 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Aly Vincent, the Texas Woman’s University soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to the University of North Texas Mean Green on Friday night at the North Texas Soccer Field.
Vincent’s effort was the highlight for TWU in what was a defensive-oriented, low-scoring contest. The former Denton Ryan standout (pictured) turned away eight Mean Green shots in the first half and five more in the second half to keep the Pioneers within striking distance. UNT fired the ball often at TWU goal - they had 24 total shots in the game - but Vincent allowed just two goals against. The Mean Green’s first score came in the 14th minute when junior midfielder Veronica Ayala deflected a free kick from teammate Kendall Juett into the TWU net. In the 28th minute, North Texas junior defender Gennifer Hurst hopped on a loose ball in the TWU goal box and was able to steer it by Vincent.
The Pioneers had their best scoring chance in the 36th minute when senior defender Natalie Grant was turned away by North Texas keeper Kandice Ellis from 10 yards out. Ellis made three saves on the night to record her 13th career shutout in the 2007 season opener for the Mean Green.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar spoke glowingly about Vincent’s play following the match.
“Aly certainly gave us a chance to win, that’s for sure,” she said. “We tried to pack it in and not take a lot of chances. Because of that, she (Vincent) had to face a lot of shots and step up big. She did her part, and I’m disappointed that we couldn’t give her any offensive support. I’m proud of my team though, everybody did their job and we were right in this game.”
The Pioneers, now 0-3 on the season, will take the pitch again on Saturday, September 1, when they meet Sterling College at 3:00 p.m. at Northwood University in Cedar Hill, Texas. |
