CENTRAL MISSOURI BLANKS TWU 2-0
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (August 26) – Two second half goals carried the University of Central Missouri Jennies to a 2-0 victory over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers on Sunday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first forty-five minutes of play. TWU had the best scoring chance of the opening half in the 31st minute when freshman forward Gayle Grand-Lienard received a crossing pass from junior defender Traci Gibbs and headed a shot towards the UCM goal. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, Lienard’s scoring attempt was denied by the Jennies senior goaltender, Elizabeth Casey.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar was pleased with her team’s play in the first half despite the fact that the Pioneers could not get on the scoreboard.
“I thought we had a much better first half today than we did on Friday (a season-opening 2-1 loss versus Southwest Baptist University). We really carried the play and controlled the action. Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of the scoring chances we had,” she said.
UCM raised their level of play in the second half and TWU was unable to answer. The Jennies scored the first goal of the game in the 66th minute when sophomore forward Kayla Jupp fired a shot from 25 yards out on the left side of the field that found it’s way into the upper right hand corner of the TWU net. UCM added an insurance goal six minutes later when sophomore forward Melanie Hall converted the rebound of a Jupp shot into an easy goal.
“We faded in the second half,” stated Benatar. “We needed to build on our first half performance and we just didn’t do that. They (UCM) started to be more aggressive and we didn’t match their intensity.”
TWU, 0-2 on the season, will next take the pitch on Friday, August 31, when they travel across Denton to meet the University of North Texas Mean Green in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Mean Green Village Soccer Stadium.
