TWU HIRES NICK STAVROU AS ASSISTANT SOCCER COACH
DENTON, Texas (August 1) – Texas Woman’s University Director of Athletics Chalese Connors has announced the hiring of Nick Stavrou (pictured) as the Pioneers’ assistant soccer coach effective today.
Stavrou (pronounced STAV-row) is a familiar name in the Metroplex soccer coaching circles. Since July 1993, he has served as a coach for the Dallas-based Solar Soccer Club, leading boys and girls teams between the ages of 9-19. As a bench boss for Solar, he has coached numerous Classic League and State Cup Champions. More than 60 players under his direction with Solar have gone on to play college soccer. Additionally, several of his Solar athletes (including Drew Moor and Kenny Cooper of FC Dallas) are currently playing professional soccer.
Since November 2004, Stavrou has also been the head coach of the Prestonwood Christian Academy varsity boys soccer team in Plano, Texas. In 2006, Stavrou led the Lions to the TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) 5A Division II District I championship and was chosen as the district’s Coach of the Year.
Before turning his attention to coaching, Stavrou enjoyed a thirteen-year (1991-2004) career as a professional soccer player for the Dallas Sidekicks of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Stavrou was the Sidekicks’ team captain for three seasons, 2002-04, and helped the club to MISL championships in 1993, 1998 and 2001.
Stavrou played collegiate soccer for four seasons at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio, from 1987-91. He was an NCAA Division I All-American both athletically and academically for the Vikings. In May 1991, Stavrou received his Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from CSU and won the university’s Presidential Award as its Most Outstanding Graduate. In 2002, he was inducted into the Cleveland State University Athletics Hall of Fame.
TWU head soccer coach Fleur Benatar is pleased to add Stavrou to her coaching staff.
“Nick is an excellent addition to our team. He is very well respected in this area as both a player and a coach. He knows the game, and, more importantly, he knows how to teach the game. I believe he is going to make a very positive contribution to our program,” said Benatar.
Stavrou is excited to be joining the Pioneers athletics department.
"This (coaching college soccer) is a new challenge for me. TWU is an outstanding school with top-notch student-athletes and wonderful facilities. I’m looking forward to doing what I can to help the soccer team succeed,” he explained. |
