PIONEERS PICKED NINTH IN 2007 LSC SOCCER PRESEASON POLL
RICHARDSON, Texas (July 30) – Central Oklahoma is once again the team to beat for the Lone Star Conference women’s soccer title as the Bronchos are the clear cut favorite according to the league’s 2007 preseason poll released in late July.
UCO, which captured last year’s regular-season LSC championship with a perfect 9-0-0 league mark, has ended up on top of the LSC standings five times in the past seven seasons, including two runner-up finishes during that time. The Bronchos boast an all-time 59-13-3 record in league games since starting its program in 1998.
The Bronchos tallied 25 first-place votes among the 28 ballots that were cast by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors and various media representatives. UCO totaled 305 points in the preseason poll to finish in front of its conference opponents.
West Texas A&M was second with 272 points, while Texas A&M-Commerce was third with 239 and Midwestern State fourth with 223. Angelo State finished fifth with 209, followed by Eastern New Mexico 153, Southwestern Oklahoma 118, Northeastern State 117, Texas Woman’s 102, East Central 56 and first-year program Abilene Christian 54.
The 2007 soccer season starts on the pitch in late August. Each of the 11 LSC teams will play the other 10 once during the regular season, with the results of those contests to be used in determining the seeds for a six-team postseason conference tournament. This year's tournament will be hosted by the No. 1 seed on Nov. 1-2-4, 2007.
