MORALES MAKES A WINNER OUT OF TWU
Box Score
WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma (October 7) – A goal in the 89th minute from freshman midfielder Raven Morales gave the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers a 2-1 win over the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs on a windy Sunday afternoon in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
The Pioneers’ dramatic game-winning goal was set up when senior midfielder Natalie Grant dribbled the ball down the left sideline and fired a cross along the ground that hit Morales (pictured) in stride as she moved into the Bulldogs’ goal box. Morales made a nifty one-on-one move to elude SWOSU sophomore goalkeeper Becky Hilterbran and then kicked in her TWU team-high sixth goal of the season.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar praised both Morales and Grant for their efforts on the decisive goal.
“Natalie showed good speed and good poise by dribbling that ball down the sideline. She made the defenders commit to her and then sent a great ball into the box. And then, when Raven ran onto the ball, she held on to it long enough to force the goalie to make the first move before putting the ball into the net. That was a good goal,” she said.
The late-game heroics by Morales became necessary for TWU after a goal by SWOSU senior midfielder Carrie Dumbauld tied the game at one in the 83rd minute. Sophomore midfielder Chastity Hayter had given the Pioneers a 1-0 lead when she netted a breakaway goal in the 40th minute of the first half.
The Lone Star Conference win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Pioneers and improved their record to 4-8-1 for the season and 1-3-0 in LSC play. The loss dropped SWOSU to 0-13 on the year and 0-4 in the conference.
TWU will be back on the pitch this Wednesday, October 10, at 4:00 p.m. when they play a conference game against Texas A&M University-Commerce in Commerce, Texas.
