PIONEERS PREPARED FOR 2007 LONE STAR CONFERENCE WOMEN’S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
DENTON, Texas (October 31) – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers closed out their 2007 regular season by winning five of their last seven games played. The season-ending surge helped TWU finish with a winning mark (5-4-1) in Lone Star Conference play for the first time in the six-year history of the program and tie for third place in the final regular season conference standings.
The Pioneers strong finish also earned them a berth in the 2007 Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Championship scheduled for November 1, 2-4 at Tom Thompson Field on the campus of the regular season LSC champion, the University of Central Oklahoma. By virtue of a tiebreaker, TWU will be the fourth seed in the six-team postseason tournament. The Pioneers will open tourney play against the fifth-seed, Texas A&M University-Commerce, on Thursday, November 1, at 2:30 p.m. In a twist of irony, the first (and last) time TWU competed in the LSC tournament, in November 2005, they defeated TAMUC on penalty kicks after battling to a 2-2 tie. TWU and TAMUC met once during the 2007 regular season, on Wednesday, October 10, in Commerce, with the Pioneers coming away with a 2-1 win on a penalty kick by junior midfielder Theresa Sanches in the games’ 80th minute. TWU head coach Fleur Benatar believes that result will help her team when they face the Lions on Thursday.
“We played well against Commerce in that game,” said Benatar. “That was a big win for us, because, up until then, we had never beaten them. That victory should boost our confidence as we head into the tournament.”
Should TWU get by TAMUC on Thursday, they would play the host team, UCO, in the tournament semifinals on Friday, November 2, at 2:30 p.m. The final game of the tournament is scheduled for Sunday, November 4, at 1:00 p.m.
All of the Pioneers’ games in the 2007 Lone Star Conference Women’s Soccer Championship will be shown live via internet video streaming at LSClive.tv, conference officials announced recently. Webcasts of each game are available for only $5.00 per game or a tournament pass can be purchased for $12.99. Each webcast includes both video and audio, with viewers needing only a computer with a high-speed DSL or cable modem connection to the internet. Veteran broadcaster Chris Needham has the call for all the games.
