TIE WITH ACU QUALIFIES TWU FOR 2007 LONE STAR CONFERENCE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
Box Score
ABILENE, Texas (October 28) – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team closed out its 2007 regular season by playing to a scoreless double overtime tie against the Abilene Christian University Wildcats on Sunday afternoon in Abilene.
The draw, however, felt like a win for the Pioneers as it earned the team a berth in the 2007 Lone Star Conference Soccer Championship. TWU finished 5-4-1 in the final regular season conference standings and will be the fourth seed in the six-team postseason tournament that will be played November 1, 2, and 4 in Edmond, Oklahoma. The Pioneers will open tourney play on Thursday, November 1, at 2:30 p.m. versus the fifth seeded Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions. Ironically enough, the first (and last) time TWU competed in the LSC tournament, in November 2005, they defeated TAMUC on penalty kicks after battling to a 2-2 tie.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar is elated to have her team in the field for the conference tournament.
“I felt all along that this team was capable of making it to the tournament. We started slow in conference play (0-3), but we never lost confidence. These girls kept fighting, they kept believing in each other, and, as a result, we’ve got a shot at the conference championship,” said Benatar.
Should TWU defeat TAMUC on Thursday afternoon, they would advance to play the host team of the tournament, the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos, on Friday, November 2, at 2:30 p.m. UCO earned its fourth straight LSC regular season conference championship by winning all 10 of their conference games.
The tie with ACU (8-11-1, 3-6-1 LSC) sets the Pioneers’ final regular season mark at 8-9-2. After struggling to a 3-8-1 record in their first twelve games played, TWU closed the season on a 5-1-1 tear. Benatar believes her team’s recent hot streak bodes well for the upcoming tournament.
“We’re on a roll right now,” she said. “That certainly should give us a boost as we get ready to play Commerce on Thursday. Hopefully we can keep it going and make a long run in the tournament.”
