PIONEERS FALL 1-0 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
Box Score
SAN ANGELO, Texas (October 26, 2007) – A goal by senior forward Ashley Tatum in the fourth minute of the second overtime lifted the Angelo State University Rambelles to a 1-0 win over the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers in a Friday afternoon Lone Star Conference soccer game at the ASU Soccer Field in San Angelo, Texas.
Tatum’s score was set up when ASU defender Kristen Boister crossed the ball into the Pioneers’ goal box from the right-wing side of the field. TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent got a hand on Boister’s pass as it came towards the Pioneers’ net only to see the ball rebound straight to Tatum. With the empty net in front of her, Tatum was easily able to tap the ball into the TWU goal for her conference-leading fourteenth goal of the season.
TWU was unable to score in the game despite outshooting the Rambelles by a 25-11 margin. Sixteen of the Pioneers’ shots were on goal, seven of them by sophomore forward Chastity Hayter. ASU senior goalkeeper Becky Martin denied the Pioneers time and time again by making several outstanding saves.
“Give Martin credit,” said TWU head coach Fleur Benatar. “We peppered her with shots, but she made some big saves. It’s pretty frustrating to get over 20 shots and not be able to score a single goal. We had our chances, but we just didn’t do enough to put the ball into the net.”
Vincent made six saves for TWU before giving up the goal to Tatum. The goal was the first allowed by Vincent in over 390 minutes of play. The junior from Denton’s Billy Ryan High School came into Friday’s game having recorded shutout wins in each of the Pioneers’ last three games played.
The defeat snapped a school-record five game winning streak for TWU (8-9-1, 5-4 LSC). Despite the loss, TWU remains in an excellent position to qualify for the 2007 Lone Star Conference Soccer Championship. The Pioneers are now tied for third place in the conference standings with ASU (8-8-1, 5-4 LSC) and Texas A&M-Commerce (9-9, 5-4 LSC). The top six teams in regular season conference play will qualify for the league’s postseason tournament scheduled to begin next Thursday, November 1, in Edmond, Oklahoma.
The Pioneers’ final game of the 2007 regular season will be on Sunday, October 28, at 2:00 p.m. at Abilene Christian University.
