HAYTER’S GOAL GIVES TWU A 1-0 WIN OVER WTAMU
Box Score
DENTON, Texas (October 19) – Sophomore forward Chastity Hayter’s goal off a free kick in the 38th minute of the first half propelled the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers to a 1-0 win over the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs on Friday night at the TWU Soccer Field.
The scoring opportunity for Hayter (pictured) came after a foul was called on WTAMU defender Kayla Sisco. Hayter set the ball down 27 yards away from the Lady Buffs’ goal and just outside the top right corner of the WTAMU goal box. After waiting patiently for the other players to get in position, Hayter blasted a curving shot that slipped past the Lady Buffs’ defensive wall and then spun away from WTAMU goalkeeper Lisha Jungmann and into the left-hand corner of the net.
“That was an amazing shot,” was how TWU head coach Fleur Benatar explained the goal. “After the foul was called, Nick (Stavrou, the Pioneers’ assistant coach) and I talked for a few seconds about who should take the kick. Both of us immediately said Chastity, because we felt like she was the one that could capitalize on this opportunity. She definitely came through for us.”
The tally for Hayter was her fourth of the season and her third goal in her last four games played. She is now second on the Pioneers’ roster in both goals and points (9).
“She’s on a roll right now,” said Benatar of her star forward. “We started the season playing her at defense, but once we got (junior midfielder) Theresa Sanches back in the lineup, we were able to move Chastity up front. She has definitely been the catalyst our offense.”
Sparked by Hayter’s score, the Pioneers controlled play in the opening stages of the second half. In the 56th minute, TWU senior midfielder Christine Hornisher ran onto a ball in the WTAMU goal box and had only Jungmann standing in her way of an empty net goal. Jungmann acted first, diving towards Hornisher’s feet in an attempt to knock away the ball. Hornisher, however, reacted quickly and chipped the ball into the air over the fallen goalkeeper. Unfortunately for TWU, the ball struck the center of the crossbar and rebounded out of harms way.
WTAMU reacted to Hornisher’s near miss by picking up their attack. Just over three minutes later, the Lady Buffs had their best scoring chance of the game when sophomore forward Miriam Dominguez got her head on a ball in the air on the right side of the TWU goal box. Fortunately for the Pioneers, senior defender Sue Cribbes read the play and was able to deflect Dominquez’s scoring chance away from the TWU net.
As time wound down in the second half, the Lady Buffs continued to press for the tying goal. With just 15 seconds left on the clock, WTAMU had one final chance to tie the score when sophomore midfielder Adi Stein found some free space at the top of the TWU goal box. Stein ripped a shot towards the Pioneers’ net only to see TWU sophomore goalkeeper Aly Vincent calmly knock the ball away.
Vincent stopped all nine WTAMU shots she faced to record her fourth shutout of the year (and her second in as many games).
“Aly played well,” said Benatar. “She was there to bail us out when our defense broke down. She’s really seeing the ball right now and making the saves we need her to make to give us a chance to win.”
The win was the fourth in a row for the streaking Pioneers. TWU is now 7-8-1 on the season and 4-4 in Lone Star Conference play. The last three TWU victories (over Texas A&M-Commerce, Midwestern State University, and West Texas A&M) have come against schools they had never before beaten in the six-year history of the Pioneers’ soccer program.
Benatar said an improved work ethic is the main reason for the Pioneers’ recent success.
“This team is really working hard. They want to win, and more importantly, they believe they can win. We’re knocking off the top teams in this conference, and that’s giving these kids all kinds of confidence. I’m so proud of the way we’re playing right now.”
TWU will look to continue its winning ways on Sunday, October 21, when they host another Lone Star Conference foe, Eastern New Mexico University, at 1:00 p.m. on their home field.
