TWU DEFEATS #24 MSU
Box Score
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (October 14) - A goal off the head of senior midfielder Christine Hornisher in the 76 th minute of play gave the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers a 1-0 win over the Midwestern State University Mustangs in a Sunday afternoon Lone Star Conference soccer game at the MSU Soccer Field.
Hornisher’s goal, her second of the season, was created when TWU sophomore forward Chastity Hayter floated a crossing pass from the right side of the field into the center of the MSU goal box. Hornisher leaped high into the air and headed the ball by MSU goalkeeper Heather Primavera and into left side of the Mustangs’ goal.
“It was a well-executed play,” was how TWU head coach Fleur Benatar described the Pioneers’ goal. “Hayter used her speed to get some separation from the defense and then she sent a beautiful ball into the box. Hornisher ran onto the ball and timed her jump perfectly.”
Hornisher’s tally proved to be the only score of the game as TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent made six saves to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard and record her second shutout of the season.
“Aly was sharp today,” said Benatar. “MSU normally scores more than two goals a game, so for her to get a shutout today is really impressive.”
The Mustangs came into the game ranked 24 th in the NSCAA/adidas national poll. Benatar credited her players for raising their level of play against such a highly-ranked opponent.
“We talked before the game that we needed to be confident, stay aggressive, and take the game to them,” she said. “When we play with purpose and poise, we are definitely capable of beating the top teams in the nation.”
The win for the Pioneers (6-8-1, 3-3 LSC) was their third in a row and their first in six all-time meetings against the Mustangs (8-3-2, 4-2 LSC).
TWU will look to continue their winning ways later this week when they play their final two home games of the 2007 season at the TWU Soccer Field. On Friday, October 19, the Pioneers will host West Texas A&M at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday, October 21, TWU will meet Eastern New Mexico University at 1:00 p.m.
