BUFFS HAND PIONEERS SEASON ENDING 5-0 LOSS

CANYON, Texas (Oct. 22) – The 2006 soccer season for the TWU Pioneers came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs.

The humbling defeat, TWU's seventh in a row, set the Pioneers final regular season record at 4-13-2, 1-7-1 in Lone Star Conference play.

West Texas A&M (14-2-1, 6-2-1 conf.) started the scoring early in game as sophomore midfielder Elisabeth Markussen found the back of the TWU net just :21 into the first half. Markussen's goal would be the first of four in the opening frame for the Lady Buffs. Senior forward Sarit Shenar netted another goal for the home team in the game's sixteenth minute to make the score 2-0. Then, WTAMU freshman midfielder Brianna McMullen scored back-to-back goals twenty-two minutes apart (19:49 and 41:49) to give the Buffs a commanding four-goal lead at halftime.

The Lady Buffs then finished off the scoring in the contest at the 64:52 mark of the second half on a goal by freshman forward Kendal Kitchens.

TWU outshot the Lady Buffs in the game 19-15, but the Pioneers could not get anything past WTAMU goalkeepers Lisha Jungmann and Sarah Pipkin.

Playing the final game of her outstanding TWU career, senior forward Emily Meinen registered a Pioneers team-high four shots in the game. Junior midfielder Romy Luna chipped in with two shots of her own.

TWU head coach Fleur Benatar called the loss a tough way for her team to close out the season.

"I'm disappointed, to say the least," Benatar said. "We had way too many defensive breakdowns in this game. I wanted to go out on a high note with a win, but, unfortunately, we couldn't get it done."
