TWU DROPS A 2-1 DECISION TO EASTERN NEW MEXICO
PORTALES, New Mexico (Oct. 20) – Two goals off the foot of star forward Megan Dozier led the Eastern New Mexico Zias to a 2-1 win over the TWU Pioneers on Friday afternoon in Portales, New Mexico.
Dozier, a senior from Midland, Texas, gave the home team an early lead just 2:30 into the game when she drilled an uncontested shot from the left side of the TWU goal by Pioneers goalkeeper Aly Vincent. Shortly after giving up the initial score to Dozier, Vincent was replaced in the TWU net by Krista Elbert.
The Pioneers would come back to tie the game at one in the 23rd minute of the first half when senior forward Emily Meinen lofted a shot from 25 yards out into the ENMU goal. The score for Meinen, her fourth in her last five games, increased her TWU team-leading season goal total to 8.
Dozier was not done, however, and she netted what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 11:59 mark of the second half. She gathered in a pass from forward Kara Henderson at midfield and was able to dribble her way through the TWU defense. She finished off the attack by beating Elbert for her Zia team high tenth goal of the season. The ten scores by Dozier ties her own ENMU single-season record that she set during the 2004 campaign.
TWU stayed aggressive in the second half, but the Pioneers could not come up with the tying goal.
The defeat for TWU, their sixth in a row, drops the Pioneers season record to 4-12-2 and 1-6-1 in LSC play. Eastern New Mexico improves to 9-7-1 for the year and 4-3-1 in the conference.
Pioneers head coach Fleur Benatar described the loss as frustrating.
"I can't criticize our effort, or the way we played. We had our chances to score, but we didn't capitalize. Dozier was outstanding for ENMU, but we still had a chance to win. This is another tough loss for us," Benatar stated.
The Pioneers will wrap up their 2006 regular season with a road game on Sunday, October 22, in Canyon, Texas against West Texas A&M.
