A&M-COMMERCE TOPS PIONEERS 2-0
DENTON, Texas (Oct. 17) – The Texas A&M-Commerce Lions scored two goals off of headers, one in each half, en route to defeating the Texas Woman's University Pioneers 2-0 in Lone Star Conference soccer action on Tuesday afternoon in Denton.
The Lions tallied the contest's opening score in the 28th minute of the first half. Senior midfielder Celia Cross sailed a corner kick from the left side towards the far post of the Pioneers goal. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Pierce was there for TAMC, and she easily headed the ball past TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent and into the net.
Playing their final home game of the 2006 season, the Pioneers would try to rally in the second half. Senior midfielder Melissa Williams would make several runs into the Lions end of the field, but, she was unable to capitalize on her offensive chances.
In the game's 63rd minute, the Lions would add an insurance goal. Sophomore forward Bailey Geels centered a beautiful ball from the left side to the near corner of the Pioneers goal. Geels' precision pass found the head of diving TAMC forward Melissa DoRemus, and DoRemus cleanly volleyed the ball into the TWU net. The highlight reel goal from DoRemus was her fourth of the season, and put the Lions on top by a 2-0 score.
With the momentum clearly on their side, the Lions were able to hold off the Pioneers in the game's final minutes and they cruised to the road win.
The loss for TWU was their fifth in a row, and sets the Pioneers record at 4-11-2 overall and 1-5-1 in LSC play. The victory for TAMC was their fourth in their last five games and gives the Lions a 8-5-3 overall record and a 3-1-1 mark in conference competition.
TWU head coach Fleur Benatar said the more agressive team came out on top.
"They attacked more, and they had more offensive chances. For whatever reason, we didn't play as agressive as we needed to. A&M-Commerce is good at what they do; the majority of their goals this season have come off of balls in the air, and they hurt us twice today in that fashion. This was a tough loss for us in a game that we needed to win," stated Benatar.
The Pioneers will wrap up their 2006 regular season with two road games this weekend. On Friday, October 20, TWU will play Eastern New Mexico in Portales, New Mexico at 3 p.m. Then, on Sunday, October 22, they will go to Canyon, Texas to take on West Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
