SECOND HALF SURGE GIVES UCO 2-1 WIN OVER TWU
DENTON, Texas (Oct. 8) – The UCO Bronchos scored two second half goals to come from behind and defeat the TWU Pioneers 2-1 in Sunday afternoon Lone Star Conference soccer action at the UNT Intramural Field in Denton.
TWU appeared poised for the win after a strong first half effort. The Pioneers carried the play throughout the opening 45 minutes of the game, and, they were rewarded for their work with the game's opening goal. At the 28:11 mark, senior forward Emily Meinen gathered in a long pass from Natalie Grant inside the Bronchos penalty box and made a nifty move to sidestep UCO goalkeeper Rebekah Svensson. Meinen punched the ball into the empty Bronchos net for her TWU team-high seventh goal of the season.
UCO would begin to rally four minutes into the second half when Jackie Hancock converted a cross from the right side by Lacy Williams into the visitor's first goal of the game. Twelve minutes later, in the 61st minute, UCO would take the lead on another strong effort by Williams. The sophomore midfielder from Bixby, Oklahoma broke free in front of the TWU goal and fired a shot on goal. Pioneers goaltender Aly Vincent made the save, but the rebound caromed right to the Bronchos' Tiffany Haines. Haines volleyed the ball into the net to put UCO in front 2-1.
Playing from behind for the first time in the game, the resilient Pioneers refused to fold. TWU continued to attack, and very nearly tied the contest with just under six minutes to play when Meinen tried to redirect a cross from Sue Cribbs. A sensational save by UCO goalie Carly Fischer prevented Meinen's second goal of the day and kept the Bronchos in front.
Despite seeing her team suffer its fourth loss in a row, Pioneers head coach Fleur Benatar remained positve following the game.
"I'm so proud of the way my team played today. We played with heart and intensity, and we worked hard for the entire game. I thought we had more quality scoring chances than UCO, but, right now, we're not getting any breaks or having any luck. If we can keep competing like this, we're going to get our fair share of wins," stated Benatar.
The win for UCO (12-3-0) was their third in a row and it keeps the Bronchos undefeated in LSC play (5-0).
TWU (4-10-2, 1-4-1 LSC) will next be in action on Sunday, October 15 when they host Texas A&M Commerce at 2 p.m. at the UNT Intramural Field.
