TWU TAKES DOWN TARLETON STATE IN FIVE GAME MARATHON
KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University Pioneers earned a hard fought victory on Friday afternoon in Lone Star Conference volleyball action, outlasting the Tarleton State TexAnns in five games, 33-31, 23-30, 30-22, 27-30, 15-12.
The match was the third of the year between the TWU and TSU. The Pioneers completely controlled the TexAnns in their first two meetings of the season (on Saturday, September 2 and Tuesday, September 26), winning each match by a sweep. Today’s victory, however, was much more difficult for the Pioneers.
“It was a battle, that’s for sure,” stated Pioneers head coach Shelly Barberee. “We fought hard the entire match. Nothing was easy for us. We had a long day of travel, and my kids were a little fatigued to say the least. Tarleton State gave us one of their best efforts of the year, but we rose to the challenge and did what we had to do to get the win.”
TWU rallied from a 27-23 deficit late in the first game to set the tone for what was an up-and-down match.
“We got down early, but our girls were able to rally. Coming from behind to win that first game helped give us a little bit of momentum,” Barberee said.
Three Pioneer players-Kandis Schroeder, Krystle Everett, and Nicole Everett-recorded double-digit kills in the match. Schroeder led the way with 18, while Krystle Everett and Nicole Everett had 17 and 15 respectively.
For the match TWU recorded a hitting percentage of .159 and made just nine serving errors on 126 service attempts.
The win improves the Pioneers record to 18-6 on the season and 4-3 in LSC play.
The match was the first of three for the Pioneers this weekend against LSC South Division teams in the Lone Star Conference Crossover Tournament at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Tomorrow, Saturday, October 7, TWU will meet Abilene Christian University at 9 a.m. and then face West Texas A&M University at 3 p.m.
