SWOSU SLIPS BY PIONEERS 2-1
DENTON, Texas – Despite controlling play for the majority of the game, the Texas Woman’s University Pioneers soccer team suffered a Lone Star Conference loss on Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 to the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bulldogs at the UNT Intramural Field in Denton.
The Pioneers dictated the tempo of the contest from the opening whistle, and played much of the ninety minutes in the SWOSU end of the field. Despite outshooting SWOSU 25-12, TWU could manage just one goal, as forward Emily Meinen netted a cross from midfielder Romy Luna at the 83:02 mark.
“We didn’t convert offensively,” said Pioneers head coach Fleur Benatar. “To score just one goal on 25 shots and 10 good scoring chances is not going to get the job done. We have to be able to put the ball in the net and finish when we have opportunities.”
TWU (4-9-2, 1-3-1 LSC) had several outstanding scoring chances in the early stages of the game. SWOSU (5-6-1, 2-2-0 LSC) goaltender Keli Bass, however, rose to the occasion, and kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard.
“I really felt we could have had four goals in the first twenty minutes of the game. We failed to capitalize on our early chances, and that came back to haunt us in the end,” stated Benatar.
SWOSU opened the scoring in the game at 27:54 when Meghan Vance ran onto a ball up the right side and managed to drive the ball past TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent. The Bulldogs then extended their lead to 2-0 in the games’ 76th minute on Carrie Dumbauld’s team-high seventh goal of the season.
Meinen’s late goal for the Pioneers wasn’t enough for TWU, as SWOSU managed to hold off a late Pioneer surge and escape with a road win.
TWU will look to bounce back on Sunday, October 8, when they host the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos at 1 p.m. at the UNT Intramural Field.
