DBU DOWNS TWU, 2-1, IN FINAL MINUTE
DALLAS, Texas (Oct. 3) – With 32 seconds remaining in regulation, Dallas Baptist University scored to defeat Texas Woman 's University, 2-1, Tuesday night in a non-conference contest.
DBU (7-4) took a free kick from 30 yards that Pioneer goalkeeper Aly Vincent ran out to get only to have Khyrstal Richmond head the ball over her and into the net at 89:28.
TWU (4-8-2) quickly started the counter attack and was awarded a free kick from 30 yards out in the middle of the field. Trying to tie the game and send it into overtime, Sue Cribbes launched a rocket that barely skimmed the top of the crossbar.
"The girls played so well after that long road trip [to Colorado last weekend]," Head coach Fleur Benatar said. "I started Rachel Byus and she had a great game. Natalie Harrison also played well. Everyone stepped up tonight. That goal in the last minute was just unlucky."
The first half went back and forth with the Lady Patriots striking first on a goal by Angelica Sandoval at 16:20.
After only tallying two shots in the first half, TWU used all its firepower on 12 shots in the second half. With time winding down, Chelsie Kale played a ball out of the midfield and past the DBU defense. All-time leading scorer Emily Meinen ran onto the through ball and hit it near post for her team-leading fifth goal of the year at 85:39.
"Chelsie [Kale] really made an impact when she went in," Benatar said. "She played a really nice ball and Meinen had a great finish."
This is the first time Dallas Baptist has beaten TWU. In four previous meetings, the Pioneers had won three and tied one.
"DBU plays a physical style and has a high work rate," Benatar added. "They 've definitely improved. But we 're putting this one behind us now. We 're concentrating on Friday."
The Pioneers play host to Southwestern Oklahoma State Friday at 4 p.m. and defending champion Central Oklahoma Sunday at 1 p.m. in two important LSC match-ups.
