SECOND HALF GOALS ELEVATE FORT LEWIS PAST TWU
DURANGO, Colo. (Oct. 1) – Fort Lewis College found the back of the net three times in the second half to blow open the game en route to a 4-0 win over Texas Woman 's University Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
It was the first meeting ever between these two teams.
"The altitude affected us this game," Head coach Fleur Benatar said. "We had some players gasping, trying to catch their breath toward the end of the game. But this trip ended up 1-1 [after Friday 's win over Mesa State College]. We 're ready to come home."
The Skyhawks, whose home field is at an elevation of 6,500 feet, scored at just 3:10 into the match. The Pioneers weren 't rattled and had several chances to tie the game. TWU fired seven shots including two from Chastity Hayter in the first 17 minutes but could not convert.
Down just 1-0 to start the second period, any momentum TWU had was taken away when FLC was awarded a penalty kick eleven minutes in.
"Natalie Harrison had a great tackle. She got the ball but the referee gave them a PK," Benatar said. "After they scored on that [penalty kick], we lost our momentum. The foul was especially deflating because we were working so hard."
Fort Lewis moved the ball well and never stopped the attack. The Skyhawks, who added two more goals at 60:32 and 87:54, tallied 16 shots, eight on goal. The Pioneers had 10 shots, five on goal. Aly Vincent went the distance in the net for TWU and recorded four saves.
FLC improved to 8-5 overall while TWU dropped to 4-7-2.
The Pioneers will wrap up this long five-game road trip on Tuesday when they meet Dallas Baptist at 7 p.m. Their next home game is Oct. 6 against Lone Star Conference opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State at 4 p.m.
