SOCCER SHUTS OUT EAST CENTRAL
ADA, Okla. (Sept. 24) – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team got back in the win column Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 shut out over East Central University.
The victory - their first Lone Star Conference win this season - improves the Pioneers' record to 3-6-2, 1-2-1 LSC.
"We played great soccer today," Head coach Fleur Benatar said. "The intensity was high the entire time. We were a hard-working team. All the subs impacted the game. My team is back."
It was two substitutes who scored for the Pioneers, both in the second half. Christine Hornisher played the ball off a cross from Emily Meinen and found the back of the net at 53:22 for her first goal of the season. Then Ashley Frazier, who scored in TWU's last game on Friday, made in two games in a row when she took the ball from 20 yards out, turned to the goal and sliced a shot into the right side at 71:47.
"Since we haven't been scoring as much as we should, I've just been trying to get the ball and go straight to the goal," Frazier said. "Today's game felt really good.”
“We haven't been playing well and we called a practice yesterday just by ourselves to go over what needs to happen to make the conference tournament. We talked things through."
The Pioneers definitely had a better showing today after going winless in the last six games. TWU outshot ECU, 24-10, and also led in shots on goal, 11-5. Meinen led the Pioneers with seven shots while Hayter added four.
"We easily could have had a 4-0 decision with the number of close shots we had," Benatar said. "Chas [Chastity Hayter] missed a penalty kick in the first half just wide. Overall, the offense and defense were working well today."
Aly Vincent, who tallied five saves, recorded her third shutout of the season.
"We shut everything down left and right," Benatar added. "Everyone played hard. Mandy Lambert was working hard and Chas [Hayter] was exposing people with her speed. And we had quite a few parents and friends here so the fan support was really nice. This was a great game to watch."
TWU stays on the road and will travel to Colorado next weekend to take on Mesa State and Fort Lewis for the first time.
