SOCCER FALLS TO NORTHEASTERN STATE
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (Sept. 22) – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team came out flat and struggled Friday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to Northeastern State University in Lone Star Conference action. The Pioneers have hit a slump – they haven’t won since a 1-0 decision over Texas Wesleyan on Sept. 2 and have now dropped to 2-6-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the league.
“We’re waiting to win the game in the last 10 minutes,” Head coach Fleur Benatar said. “I have the talent, I have the depth but I don’t have the people who want to put the ball in the net. The leadership is lacking and we’re giving games away. It’s frustrating.”
NSU (4-4-3, 2-1-0 LSC) struck first. Brittany Coursey sent the ball to the right side for Ashley Badeen who dribbled down the sideline. Badeen’s chip was lofted perfectly into the far side of the goal at 33:20.
The Lady Reds made it 2-0 just nine minutes into the second half. A TWU defensive miscommunication left the ball at the top of the box for Whitney Pratt to slip past Aly Vincent at 53:58.
TWU prevented a shutout when Natalie Grant’s corner kick was flicked in by Ashley Frazier at 77:27 to make it 2-1. It was Frazier’s first goal and Grant’s first assist of the season.
“We had good opportunities to tie and win this game,” Benatar said. “Emily Meinen and Christine Hornisher got close near the end. But we had balls flying in and no one there to finish them.”
TWU outshot NSU, 14-10, with seven shots on goal. Chastity Hayter led the Pioneers with four shots, two on goal.
“We’ve tried everything,” Benatar added. “All but two players went in the first half and no one stepped up. We’re out of ideas for these players. We can’t do it for them. They are either going to throw the season out the window or they are going step up. In a few short weeks they could find themselves sitting at home instead of playing in the conference tournament.”
TWU can start to turn things around Sunday with a 2 p.m. conference contest at East Central University.
