TWU SOCCER DROPS FIRST HOME GAME 1-0 TO ANGELO STATE
DENTON, Texas – A defensive letdown for a split second allowed Angelo State University to get the only goal it needed to defeat Texas Woman’s University, 1-0, on a rainy Sunday afternoon. The loss is the first at home for the Pioneers this season who fall to 2-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the Lone Star Conference.
Twelve and a half minutes into the second half, Casey Halamicek crossed the ball from the right side across the goal that went untouched as defender Natalie Harrison marked an ASU attacker in the middle of the box. The ball kept going to the left side where an unmarked Brittney Staha took the cross and fired it low into the goal at 57:30. It was Staha’s fourth goal of the season.
“The goal was a defensive mistake that any good team will capitalize on,” Head coach Fleur Benatar said. “I was disappointed that we didn’t capitalize on opportunities when we had the upper hand. We’re not scoring and that’s the problem.”
The Pioneers started the game with a steady offensive push for the first 10 minutes, then the pace of the game slowed down for both teams. Each team had only five shots in the first half.
“I have the shooters and I just don’t understand why we’re coming out slow,” Benatar said. “We’re improving every day but we can’t seem to find the goal. Maybe we’re just tired. We should be gaining confidence from the teams we are playing like Nebraska-Omaha and UNT. Instead it seems like we’re scrambling to find the net in the last 20 to 30 minutes of the game.”
TWU packed its offensive third in the final 10 minutes trying to mount attack after attack but was not productive. The Pioneers tallied a total of nine shots to 14 for the Rambelles (6-2, 1-1 LSC). Sophomore keeper Aly Vincent allowed only one goal and made six saves.
The toughest part of TWU’s schedule is coming up with five consecutive away games. The Pioneers begin with LSC match-ups with Northeastern State University on Friday and East Central University next Sunday.
“We’ve got two hard games coming up next weekend that we have to take care of,” Benatar added. “If we come out to play, they are both winnable. We’ve got to make these games count or else we’ll be sitting at home come conference tournament time.”
