PIONEERS OPEN CONFERENCE WITH 0-0 TIE
DENTON , Texas – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team opened Lone Star Conference play Tuesday with a 0-0 tie against Midwestern State University in Denton.
TWU had never beaten or tied Midwestern State in the four-year history of the program before Tuesday’s scoreless draw. Pioneers head coach Fleur Benatar said the defensive play of goalkeeper Aly Vincent and midfielder Theresa Sanches had a lot to do with her team coming out with a tie. Vincent finished with 10 saves and played the entire 110 minutes.
Both teams took advantage of a gusty north wind to get their scoring opportunities. MSU (1-1-1) outshot TWU 9-6 in the first half when they had the win. In the second half, when the wind was at the back of the Pioneers, TWU (2-2-1) had 13 shots to just four for MSU.
"The wind was a factor," Benatar said. "We were attacking the goal more in the second half when we had the wind."
Emily Meinen had two shots on goal for TWU and Chelsie Kale came in and had two scoring opportunities in the second half for the Pioneers. MSU goalie Heather Primavera made eight saves.
"I thought we were the better team," Benatar said. "We did our job. We just didn’t put the ball in the net. I was hoping to get out of here with a win, but hopefully the tie will help us later on."
