LATE GOAL LIFTS TWU OVER TEXAS WESLEYAN
DENTON, Texas – Emily Meinen used a free kick from 25 yards out to score the only goal of the match as the Texas Woman's University Pioneers defeated Texas Wesleyan 1-0 in soccer action Saturday.
TWU (2-2-0) outshot the Rams 19-5 for the match but had nothing to show for it until Meinen boomed home her third goal of the season with less than 5 minutes remaining in regulation.
"I thought we had some good opportunities to score in the first half we just didn't capitalize on them," TWU head coach Fleur Benatar said. "We kind of let them (Wesleyan) stick around. But give credit to our girls because they responded with a great goal by Emily there at the end. The team worked hard and we showed some character by coming back to get that goal."
The Pioneers' defense was solid. Goalkeeper Aly Vincent only had to make four saves during the match.
TWU almost got a goal early in the second half on a booming shot by Natalie Grant, but the shot hit the crossbar.
The Pioneers will be back at home Tuesday as they open Lone Star Conference play against Midwestern State University at 4 p.m., at the UNT Intramural Fields.
