TWU SOCCER WINS HOME OPENER
DENTON, Texas – The Texas Woman’s University soccer team showed there’s no place like home as they defeated Texas A&M International 5-1 Wednesday in their home opener.
"I’m excited that we got a win in our first home game," said Pioneer head coach Fleur Benetar. "We had some improvement to make after dropping two games last weekend (in San Antonio) and today we showed some of what we’re looking for when we start conference play next week."
TWU (1-2) dominated A&M-International (0-1), outshooting them 30-5 for the match. Senior Emily Meinen, the Pioneers’ leading returning goal-scorer from last year, had four of those shots and scored two goals to lead the attack.
"Since I didn’t score in our two road games and didn’t really contribute that much, it was nice to score twice in this game and get a confidence boost," Meinen said.
Christine Hornisher put the home team ahead with a goal in the 16 th minute on a header off a corner kick. A&M-International came back and tied the score in the 29 th minute. Callie Lawing had an unassisted goal from the top of the box in the 37 th minute to put TWU ahead 2-1. Meinen scored her first goal of the game just four minutes before halftime to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead at the intermission.
In the second period, Meinen scored on an assist from Mandy Lambert to put TWU ahead 4-1. Then in the 72 nd minute, Sue Cribbes scored off a corner kick from 20 yards out for the final margin.
The Pioneers were without standout freshman Chastity Hayter, who missed the match with an injury. But Benatar said she was proud of how the rest of her team stepped up.
"The girls did a good job of sharing the load," the coach said. "Overall, everyone is fitting into the roles we have for them."
TWU will be back at home Saturday to host Texas Wesleyan at 2 p.m., at the UNT Intramural Fields.
