PUTTING FORE PIONEERS RAISES MONEY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
DENTON, Texas (Apr. 5) – Students, faculty, staff and Denton community members made the third annual Putting Fore Pioneers Tournament a successful event again, raising $929.00 for athletics scholarships.
“This event just keeps getting better and better,” Director of Athletics Chalese Connors said. “I was glad to see more participation from our campus community. We had a lot of fun and Athletics truly appreciates all the support from Kyle Voyles, David Sweeten and the Student Union staff. ”
A nine-hole miniature golf course was set up on the second floor of the Texas Woman’s University Student Union. The putting competition included a student and a faculty/staff division. Laura Merkh was the student champion with a score of 23. The twosome of Mike Roell and Cathy Szpet won the student team event with a score of 61. In the faculty/staff division, Jean Mankoff, director of instructional technology programs, carded a 20 to win the individual title. The TWU Pioneers volleyball coaching duo of Shelly Barberee and Ryan Gould combined to take the faculty/staff team title with a low score of 46. In addition, TREES won the award for most student participation and will receive a catered lunch from Jason’s Deli courtesy of the Student Union.
In conjunction with the golf tournament, a raffle featuring more than 35 prizes was held. Among the raffle prizes given away were Texas Rangers baseball tickets, Dallas Symphony tickets, and Texas Motor Speedway tickets.
Each year, approximately 80 Pioneer student-athletes participate in intercollegiate athletics while also excelling academically at the University.
For the past 49 consecutive semesters, the cumulative grade point average of all five TWU intercollegiate athletic teams has never dropped below a 3.0. Almost all of these outstanding young women receive some form of scholarship assistance, ranging from small awards to full scholarships that cover tuition, fees, housing, meals and books.
For the 2007-08 academic year, a full grant-in-aid at TWU will cost an estimated $12,626.50 and the amount needed to fully support the five Pioneer varsity teams is $518,949.15. Funding for athletics scholarships is garnered through a combination of donations, fundraisers, University support, and generated revenue from the Athletics department and its summer camps.
