TWU GYMNASTICS TEAM SIGNS TWO
DENTON, Texas (November 28) – The nine-time USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate national champion Texas Woman’s University Pioneers signed two gymnasts to National Letters of Intent during the fall 2008 early signing period.
Sara Grunert, a native of Woodridge, Illinois, and Kristin Edwards, a product of St. Paul, Minnesota, have both committed to TWU and will compete for the Pioneers beginning with the 2010 season.
Grunert (pictured at right) is in her second year as a Level 10 competitor at the nationally acclaimed Illinois Gymnastics Institute (IGI) in Westmont, Illinois. She is one of eight high school seniors from IGI to recently receive a college gymnastics scholarship. Last year, she qualified for both the Level 10 state and regional meets. As a sophomore in 2007, she took part in the Level 9 state, regional, and Eastern competitions. In 2006, she qualified for Level 9 state and regionals. TWU assistant gymnastics coach Lisa Klein anticipates Grunert developing into a strong all-arounder for the Pioneers.
“Sara will probably help us the most on bars and beam initially, but, because she is constantly improving, I see her eventually making positive contributions on all four events,” she explained.
Grunert will graduate from Downers Grove (Ill.) South High School in May 2009 before enrolling at TWU as a kinesiology major.
Edwards (pictured at left) has honed her considerable gymnastics skills at Midwest Gymnastics in Arden Hills, Minnesota. The 2009 season will be her third as a Level 10 competitor. Klein describes Edward’s as an extremely strong and dynamic athlete.
“Kristin is very powerful and explosive. With her athletic ability she should be capable of helping us as an all-arounder,” she stated.
Edwards also draws praise for her high level of character.
“Jess Graba (her club coach) says Kristin is the role model for all the younger girls at her gym. She’s very strong-willed and determined, and that’s the kind of attitude that we want to build our team around here at TWU,” detailed Klein.
Edwards will finish her high school studies at Fairview Alternative High School in May 2009 before matriculating to TWU as a kinesiology major.
