PIONEERS HONORED BY THE GYMNASTICS ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS
DENTON, Texas (September 5) – The Texas Woman’s University gymnastics team received numerous awards from the Gymnastics Association of Texas (GAT) at its 2007 convention held last weekend in Austin.
Two TWU gymnasts - Courtney Arno and Rachel Zimmerman - received Collegiate Honor Awards. Arno (pictured) won the 2007 USAG National Championship on the uneven bars, finished eighth in the nation on balance beam, and was a 2007 USAG All-American first team selection on both bars and beam. Zimmerman won the 2007 USAG National Championship on balance beam, was a 2007 USAG All-American first-team choice on beam, and also garnered 2007 USAG All-American second-team honors on floor exercise. The entire 2007 TWU Gymnastics coaching staff - head coach Frank Kudlac, assistant coach Jackie Fain, assistant coach Tim Rivera, and graduate assistant coach Lisa Klein - also received Collegiate Honor Awards for their roles in directing both Arno and Zimmerman to their profound success. Adri Perry, the 2007 TWU Gymnastics trainer, was recognized with a Collegiate Honor Award as well.
GAT presents Collegiate Honor Awards to individuals who distinguish themselves “by excellence of performance and coaching at the highest level of national competition”.
Four TWU gymnasts - Brittany Parker, Amy Hulbert, Tonya Pipkorn, and Catherine Schnoes - were granted Collegiate Merit Awards. Parker was a 2007 USAG All-American second team choice on vault. Hulbert was a 2007 USAG All-American first team honoree on floor exercise and a second team selection on vault. Pipkorn was a 2007 USAG All-American second team pick on floor exercise and Schnoes landed a spot on the 2007 USAG All-American first team for vault. Kudlac, Fain, Rivera, and Klein all took home Collegiate Merit Awards for the dedicated instruction and leadership they provided Parker, Hulbert, Pipkorn and Schnoes.
Collegiate Merit Awards are given in recognition of “significant achievement in gymnastics in competition, coaching or leadership at a regional and national level”.
TWU kicks off its 2008 season with its annual Intrasquad meet on Friday, December 7, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. in Kitty Magee Arena. Admission is free.
